Throughout its evolution, the museum has objectively interpreted and presented the achievements and aspirations of African Americans from pre-colonial times to the current day. The museum is committed to telling the story of African Americans in all its permutations: family life, the Civil Rights movement, arts and entertainment, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law and technology. The AAMP currently houses four galleries and an auditorium, each of which offer exhibitions anchored by one of our three dominant themes: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story, and the Contemporary Narrative. • The American Swedish Historical Museum in South Philadelphia is the oldest Swedish Museum in the United States. Founded in 1926, the Museum has been dedicated to preserving and promoting Swedish and Swedish-American cultural heritage and traditions for nearly 80 years. The Museum is a place where Swedes, Swedish-Americans, and people of all nationalities who appreciate Swedish contributions to history, art, architecture, music, science and technology can come together. The beautiful Museum building was designed by the Swedish-American architect John Nyden. The inspiration came from Eriksberg Slott, a 17th-century mansion in Sweden, and Mount Vernon, George Washington's home in Virginia. On June 2, 1926, Sweden's Crown Prince Gustav Adolf placed the Museum's cornerstone. By October the following year the construction was nearly finished. Venue: American Swedish Historical Museum
  • Captain Joseph Lapsley Wilson once owned the land on which the Gallery and the Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation are situated. He began planting a number of trees as early as the 1880s. When Dr. and Laura Barnes purchased the property in 1922, they agreed to preserve Wilson's plantings, which became the nucleus of the Arboretum. Laura Barnes, with the support of Dr. Barnes and Dr. John Fogg, carefully enhanced the living collections to over 3,000 species/varieties of woody plants gathered from different sources around the world. The diversity of species and varieties growing in such a modest area is one of the most noteworthy features of the Arboretum. Venue: Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation

  • From the Schuylkill Expressway you can see its dome peaking above the treetops. Or you may recognize it as the backdrop for many a movie set. Memorial Hall is one of Fairmount Park's most recognizable landmarks and the only major building left from the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Fairmount Park Chief Engineer Hermann Schwarzmann created this national significant Centennial Art Gallery as one of America's first examples of Beaux-Arts architecture. Memorial Hall's price tag was $1.5 million, quite a sum at that time. Consider though that Memorial Hall was built without wood and was fireproofed. The dedication of this fine building was made by U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant at the Centennial. Memorial Hall served as the city's art museum until the Philadelphia Museum of Art opened in 1928. If you've never set foot in its Great Hall you're missing one of Philadelphia's vast spaces. A whole new generation will soon be introduced to its grand architecture and important history as the Please Touch Museum occupies Memorial Hall in 2007. To the Centennial Model enthusiasts among you, the scale Model of the 1876 Centennial Exposition fairgrounds will stay! Venue: Memorial Hall
