East Carolina University
The athletic program at East Carolina University began in 1910 with the baseball program. Basketball and football were added in 1932, and the school's "Pirates" nickname became official in 1934.
The university's 19 NCAA athletic programs are all members of Conference USA, which ranges from Greenville to El Paso, Texas. The baseball program has the most consistent national rankings, while the football program has won several conference titles, the last in 2009.
East Carolina plays football in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, which was first built in 1963 as a 17,000-seat facility, but has been expanded in 1963, 1975, 1998 and 2010 to its current 50,000 capacity. Minges Coliseum at Williams Arena was first built in 1968 and renovated in 1995. The team's baseball field, Clark-LeClair Stadium, opened in 2005.
